How Volunteering Expanded My Professional Network
I am Vignesh Kandi, Computer Applications student from HAMK. In this article, I would like to share with you my volunteering experience and my thoughts on how it can help me expand my social network.
During my freshman year, my main way to meet professionals was through university job
events such as Bitjobs. These events were packed with students all competing for a handful of job
opportunities. I quickly realized I needed to find other ways to make connections.
In my second year I volunteered at Slush, a major international event in Helsinki that brings
together tech leaders and innovators from around the world. It was my first time helping out at
such a large event, and though I didn’t connect with as many people as I hoped, I learned a lot.
Being a volunteer at slush has taught me to be better prepared for good opportunities. I saw how knowing the event schedule and key participants in advance could help in making more meaningful connections.
Even though I didn’t network as much as I could have, just being part of such an energetic and
inspiring environment was a great experience. It boosted my confidence and showed me the
importance of networking in building a career.
I didn’t stop there. I found another opportunity at Junction, which required a longer commitment
of 10 months. This wasn’t just a two-day affair; it was an ongoing experience that provided realworld work experience and numerous chances to network. I made an effort to meet as many
people as possible, which helped me understand the true value of networking — it’s not just about
professional gains but also about making friends.
This mix of professional and personal connections came in handy when I applied for a job at a
well-known company. I asked someone from my network to be a reference, and it worked! I made
it to the final interview round. In Finland, jobs often come through who you know, so it’s important
to keep building your network.
