Are you interested in sustainability and agriculture? Would you like to learn how our food is produced and what are the best practices for it? Join us in Mustiala campus and deepen your knowledge of different ways we can change the world with agriculture! In Mustiala, you will study in a historically beautiful scenery with tomorrow-proof technology, not to mention our research- and educational farm with hectares of fields.
Objective
You will learn to analyse, develop and manage effective, safe and sustainable plant and animal production in changing climate, and to work with current uses and developments of diverse technologies, technological applications and digital tools in agriculture.
Qualification provided by education
As a graduate you can work within the agricultural branch in e.g. production, business, services, advisory, education and research. Typical jobs include farm manager, agricultural expert, research technician, teacher or project manager.
Structure of studies
Climate Smart Agriculture programme offers you a broad knowledge of the agricultural branch and rural industries. You will study sustainable plant and animal production, agricultural technology and digitalisation, organic methods, bioeconomy and circular economy as well as rural entrepreneurship in hands-on trials. You can choose to deepen your knowledge in e.g. dairy industry, crop production and rural development. You will learn research work, smart solutions, project development and innovation.
Our studies are often based on real situations and problems that are provided by diverse businesses and organizations in the agricultural branch. This gives you a hands-on approach on the studies. A key learning method is teamwork in different projects, and you get to develop your competence in different teams.
We also encourage entrepreneurial mindset, and improve your skills needed for running your own company, create entrepreneurship that is based on higher education, and renew and develop existing businesses.
Also, you will study in a vary of learning environments, and a major part of studies happen on the campus’ own research- and educational farm. The farm, that has entirely organic production since 2020, includes a cowhouse and 185 ha of fields with different crops.

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual. Check more information:
Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

Campus
As a student of Climate Smart Agriculture programme, your home campus will be Mustiala.
Studies Tailored to You
Your degree consists of 240 credits and includes four core elements:
The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies.
Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.
Your work placements are divided into two periods, both 15 credits. The first one is a work placement period during growing season and the second one is a work placement in a rural expert position. You will experience the work placements during your first and second year.
Before the work placement, you will set a professional development goals to yourself in cooperation with the employer and us. You can work in different tasks in a practical working environment, either in Finland or in another country, to apply and advance your professional skills and identity. You’ll take an active, responsible role in the working community and develop your self-evaluation skills.
Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

Our Climate Smart Agriculture degree programme is tailored to be taught face to face, in campus, in order for our students to acquire the best experience and knowledge. A typical day might include classroom and (crop) field teaching, teamwork, lab work, as well as teaching and tasks preformed in our cowshed (cow house). Therefore, you would have to be present in Mustiala campus and we recommend you to apply for accommodation either in our campus student dormitories or search for accommodation in nearby towns such as Tammela or Forssa. Our staff can assist you in the process.
Being a student is a full time commitment and responsibility. However, depending on your status and/or residence permit, you might be able to work part-time. The priority should be your study progress and campus attendance. It has to be kept in mind that classes are usually starting between nine or half past nine until afternoon (including lunch break). There might be one or two days without teaching during the week, but that means that normally those days are dedicated to teamwork and writing reports or performing different tasks for the upcoming week.
Yes, it is possible to graduate earlier than four years. It depends on your motivation and eagerness to progress in your studies. With a bit of effort and determination, it would be possible to graduate after three years, or in some cases, even two and a half years! You should possess determination and always be pro-active. HAMK staff will help you to tailor your own personalised study plans, and will be happy to guide, assist and answer your questions.
After graduation you can work for example in processing industry; production; logistics, sales and trade in agricultural field; research, innovation and development in agricultural sciences; education; official functions or advisory / consultancy fields and so on.
