Are you fascinated by the possibilities of programming and artificial intelligence? Do you want to master big data and business analytics? Then you

are at right place! In our Computer Applications degree programme, you will get a strong base for your future career. 

Learning by doing and working in teams are key elements in our studies. You will have projects where you collaborate with other students and partner companies or with our research unit, HAMK Smart. During your studies, you will get chances to network with possible employers for example at our recruitment event, BitJobs.  

Objective

You will learn for example a wide range of topics in programming, user interface design, operating systems, software robotics and business. In profiling studies, you can focus on web- and mobile development, data science and artificial intelligence or software delivery and cloud computing.

Qualification provided by education

As a graduate, you will become a professional programmer ready for the modern ICT challenges. You can apply to many different programming jobs all over the world. Your work title can be for example Software Developer, ICT project Manager, Data Analyst or Game Programmer.

Structure of studies

For you as a future ICT professional, it is essential to understand the needs of your clients. To support businesses in a best way, you learn to make applications and systems easily accessible for the users. This requires a great deal of planning, patience, client understanding, project management and various other skills. You will develop these competences during your studies. 

Our Computer Applications studies are strongly based on the needs of the working life, and during your studies, you will gain work-related skills through various team projects. One of our longest-running business partnerships is the ICT project. Also, we organize the BitJobs recruitment event for our students. In this event you will meet representatives from several IT companies, and you have the opportunity to establish important contacts for your future career.

Our goal is to encourage entrepreneurial mindset. You will improve skills needed for running your own company, create entrepreneurship that is based on higher education, and renew and develop existing businesses. 

You will start your studies with compulsory core competence studies which cover a wide range of topics in programming. You will learn programming languages and techniques most commonly used today. Studies include also for example user interface design, operating systems, web development, databases, cloud operations, software robotics, business and innovation. 

 

Specialization options

Profiling studies are optional modules that you can use for steering your competence towards your career goals. After core competence studies, you will select studies according to your own interests and focus with the following profiling competences: 

  • web- and mobile development 
  • data science and artificial intelligence 
  • software delivery and cloud computing

You may also take optional studies from HAMK’s selection and from other higher education institutions in Finland or abroad. 

Your studies include work placement and a thesis. In your work placement you have an opportunity to practise in real-life working environments in companies. You will also observe how the company, the employees and the customers interact. Many of our alumni students have been employed by their internship company. In your thesis you research a subject that interests you in analytical and solution-oriented way, often for a company in your own field.

Study Paths – Open Studies Leading to a Degree

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual.

Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

Study Methods

Full-time Studies, Contact Lessons

Your studies will proceed at a steady pace in a familiar student group at Hämeenlinna campus. You get to develop your competence in different teams and in close connection to the world of work. You are committed to work every weekday.

The group starting in autumn 2024 will begin their studies on August 21, 2024.

As a student of Computer Applications programme, your home campus is Hämeenlinna University Centre.

Hämeenlinna University Centre

Our evolving, growing, and modern main campus, Hämeenlinna University Centre, brings together thousands of students and hundreds of employees. Across the expansive campus area, there are versatile facilities and services for studies across various fields as well as for research work.

The Hämeenlinna campus offers around 30 degree programs and serves as the home campus for all of HAMK’s research units. Additionally, the university center provides excellent facilities for organizing various events for both internal and external participants, resulting in frequent activity and bustling events on campus.

Studies tailored to you

Your degree consists of 210 credits and includes four core elements:

The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies

In the core competence studies you will learn programming languages and techniques most commonly used today. Studies include also e.g. user interface design, operating systems, web development, databases, cloud operations, software robotics, business and innovation, probability and statistics.

Work placement is part of the core competence studies.

Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.

You will select profiling studies according to your own interests and focus with the following competences: web- and mobile development, data science & artificial intelligence and software delivery & cloud computing.

You may take optional studies from HAMK’s module selection, but also from other higher education institutions in Finland or abroad.

You learn to apply your theoretical and professional knowledge and skills to the work environment while familiarizing with the most important practical work tasks, especially in IT field. The aim is to promote your career development, familiarise with the work environment, and to improve your job prospects.  At HAMK Computer Applications degree programme, work placement accounts for 30 credits. This means 5 months (20 weeks) full-time work in Finland, abroad or in your own company.

Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

We require B2 level English: You need to be able to communicate easily and effectively in English and take the initiative to speak. You need to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. You also need to be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. If you can understand and speak basic English, you will manage. 

Software can be literally found everywhere, from websites and wearables to cars and elevators. Not suprisingly, many new business models are largely based on utilising software in some way or another. As a result of this there is a world-wide, growing demand for specialists with skills in programming and analytics. 

You can improve your language skills and open your horizons through student exchange or an internship abroad. HAMK has partner universities in various countries. Studies and internship abroad are credited as part of the degree. 

HAMK is also part of the RUN-EU network which offers our students interesting opportunities to go international.
