Sustainable Living Tips for Students

As students in Finland, we’re lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful nature. We are also greatly responsible to take care of our environment. This isn’t just a guide; it’s a call to join together. Let’s live sustainably and protect the wonderful landscapes we love, so they stay beautiful for future
generations.

I am Vignesh Kandi, Computer Applications student from HAMK. In this article, I would like to share with you some tips for students to live more sustainably in Finland.

Choose Reusable Tote Bags Over Plastic

You can make a positive change by using reusable tote bags. They’re better for the environment
and more durable. Keep one in your backpack or by your door, so it’s always ready when you
need it. You can find stylish ones in HAMK online store or sometimes get them free at university events.

Second-Hand Shopping

Your local cities usually have several second-hand stores, such as UFF and Fida. There are also online second hand stores such as Tori. You can find almost everything, from clothes to electronics. Shopping second-hand is not only budget friendly but also a great way to find unique items and support the recycling of goods.

Transportation

When travelling around Finland, you can use bus or train services. Public transportation offers good student discounts, so you can benefit from them. In smaller cities such as in our campus areas, public transportation network is not the best. Have you then considered cycling to the campus? You can use bikes especially during the summer. During winter, it is safe to use winter tires on bicycles.

BYOC (Bring your own cup)

Lot of students love to get coffee in campus but instead of getting a new cup every time you drink, you can get a coffee cup from Student Union HAMKO and use the same cup every time you take coffee.

Educate Yourself and Others

Learn about environmental issues and ways to live sustainably. Share what you know with friends and peers to help build a more aware community.
