Cross-Institutional Studies

As a HAMK degree, study path, or exchange student, you have the opportunity to complete studies at other universities as well! This is known as cross-institutional studying, and at HAMK, we aim to ensure that we can offer you meaningful options.

What is cross-institutional studying?

Cross-institutional studying means, that a higher education student have an opportunity to study courses at another Finnish higher education institution.

Cross-institutional studying is described more precisely by the following features:

  1. The student has a valid right to study at their home university, on the basis of which they can complete studies.
  2. The student must be enrolled as present at the home university
  3. The student can choose courses from another higher education institution as agreed by the higher education institutions
  4. The studies adhere to the rules and regulations of the institution providing the instruction.

This page provides information about the practices related to cross-institutional studying at HAMK. All courses presented on this page are free for you to undertake and can contribute to your personal academic goals. However, it’s essential to ensure that these courses align with your degree requirements. Your study counselor can assist you in creating a study plan.

You can find cross-institutional study options and registration instructions below.

Cross-institutional study service has a weekly maintenance break on Tuesdays 9.00-11.00.

Study Options

As a student of HAMK, you can take courses from universities of applied sciences that are part of CampusOnline free of charge throughout the year. You can see the upcoming course offerings in Pakki. Each university of applied sciences has its own registration practices and times. You can learn more about the courses by opening the course and implementation details in Pakki. The CampusOnline portal will close on December 31, 2024, after which the courses will only be available in Pakki.

It is advisable to check the suitability of the studies for your own Personal Study Plan (PSP/HOPS) with your study counselor before registering. A Master’s degree student cannot complete Bachelor’s level studies on CampusOnline. The courses in the CampusOnline network are free of charge for degree, study path, and exchange students of partner universities when the course is suitable for the degree being pursued.

After completing the course, you will find the completion mark on your PSP when you have registered in Pakki. If you registered in another way, send the completion for recording on your PSP. The transfer form in Pakki can only be used to submit the grade for a jointly studied cross-institutional course (CampusOnline or equivalent) when the course was completed simultaneously while studying at HAMK. For studies completed elsewhere and prior to the start of the studies, an Recognition of Prior Learning (AHOT approval) application is made. The AHOT application requires a link to your Own Study Path and a screenshot from the completion view. If AHOT is applied for English or Swedish studies, an official transcript is required as an attachment.

As a part of a collaboration among 18 higher education partners, a new agreement allows the majority of Finnish university students to study courses related to climate and sustainability within the network. The course materials are open to everyone, but to receive credits for the course, the individual must be enrolled either at one of the partner universities or at an open university. Courses are mainly conducted online, with responsible teachers offering real-time teaching in addition to remote assignments and assessing students’ performances. The studies are primarily conducted in English.

In addition to the University of Helsinki, the network includes the following institutions: Aalto University, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Häme University of Applied Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, University of Jyväskylä, LAB University of Applied Sciences, University of Lapland, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT, Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, University of Oulu, Svenska handelshögskolan, University of the Arts Helsinki, Tampere University, Turku University of Applied Sciences, University of Turku, and the University of Vaasa. Instructions for registration can be found at: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/climateuniversity/

After completing the course, an HAMK student sends the evaluation to be recorded in their personal study plan. The transfer form in Pakki can only be used to submit the grade for a jointly studied cross-enrollment course (CampusOnline or equivalent) when the course was completed simultaneously while studying at HAMK. The completion can also be recognized through AHOT (Recognition of Prior Learning).

Kivanet offers a wide range of online language courses implemented in collaboration with Finnish universities.

Diak, HAMK, XAMK Soteri Network: This network offers study opportunities for cross-disciplinary study in the field of social and health care. The available courses can be found in Pakki.

From January 1, 2025, the courses and registration for CampusOnline studies will only be available in Pakki, and the separate portal page will be discontinued.

Currently, there are two alternative registration methods for cross-institutional courses, and the enrollment method depends on hich network’s courses and which university you are registering to study at..

Below, you will find the instructions on how to register for the studies.

The registration methods are:

  1. Enrollment via Pakki – CampusOnline and network studies related to degree program or field of education
  2. Enrollment through another registration route used by the network – .Climate University, Kivanet

For cross-institutional network courses, registration primarily takes place in Pakki. If enrollment in Pakki is not possible, the alternative enrollment process will be communicated via HAMK’s Viva Engage or your program’s announcements.

Before enrollment, please coordinate your studies with your study counselor. After registration, you will receive detailed instructions from the higher education institution organizing the course.

I will enroll in CampusOnline courses in Pakki

Registration for CampusOnline studies is easily done through Pakki, in the same way you would enroll in HAMK’s own courses. You can also see the registration status in your personal study plan (PSP), and after completing the course, the assessments will be transferred to your study records without the need for recognition of prior learning (RPL/AHOT) or sharing links from the My Studyinfo webpage.

You can easily find cross-institutional courses through Pakki via your personal study plan (PSP). Familiarize yourself with the course provision well in advance so that you can enroll on time. You can also browse the courses on the CampusOnline portal, but register through Pakki whenever possible.

I will enroll in Cross-institutional courses that cannot be found in Pakki

You can explore the CampusOnline offerings in the CampusOnline portal until the end of 2024, but not all spring 2025 courses are listed in the portal. Register for CampusOnline courses according to the course-specific instructions found in the portal.

You can find the instructions for registering for Kivanet and Climate University courses on the networks’ websites. The registration practices for cross-institutional studies are currently changing as the new national service pathway for cross-institutional studies, Ripa, is being gradually implemented in different universities. The cross-institutional study networks will gradually join the service pathway.

Transfer of Cross-institutional study completions from another university

When you register in Pakki, the completion is automatically transferred to your PSP/HOPS. If you haven’t registered in Pakki, you can transfer the cross-institutional study completion to Pakki using a transfer form. The link to the form can be found in Pakki from the following location:

  1. From the top menu, select the lamp icon.
  2. Choose Cross-study performance transfer to Pakki from the Study link list.
To access the form, authenticate via HAKA login. Select Häme University of Applied Sciences from the menu and use your own HAMK credentials. The form provides detailed instructions for the transfer.

Please note that this form can only be used to transfer cross-institutional study completions from another university when you have completed a course simultaneously at HAMK.

An AHOT application is made for courses completed elsewhere and completed before the start of the studies in your degree program.
Please note that Bachelor level courses cannot be included in the Master’s degree.
