We are developers of the future built environment as well as smart technology solutions and services. By leveraging data analytics, digitalization, and our extensive laboratory resources – for example, in sustainable construction and the adoption of new technologies – we play a role in solving the world’s most wicked problems.
Our focus is on conducting applied research and undertaking initiatives that are ambitious yet concrete and beneficial. Together with our partners, we have developed, among other things, a carbon sequestration measurement and modeling tool for the Field Observatory, created VR training solutions for the social and healthcare sector and various companies, studied the production methods and sustainability of bio-based dyes, and expanded the robotics capabilities in the Kanta-Häme and Pirkanmaa regions. We also invest in wearable intelligence – for instance, we have developed smart sleeves designed for e-sports, which enhance teamwork and performance. We support the development of our partner companies with years of experience.
Our research activities aim for ecologically sustainable solutions that enable new business opportunities, taking into account the impacts on climate and material cycles. We apply data analytics, machine learning, and IoT technology in the development of bio- and circular economies and utilize the latest digital technologies within the built environment. We also produce evidence-based knowledge on the utilization of digital solutions in education and working life, as VR and AR technologies and data analytics will play a pivotal role in the future of our society.

We provide our customers with high-quality construction and materials research services as well as data-analytical and digital services. We are involved in national and international cooperation networks, such as the ICP Materials network on the impact of air pollution and the SCEC dynamic steel construction platform. Our research unit’s expertise merges into multidisciplinary collaboration within HAMK’s three research ecosystems: SmartBio, SmartBuilt, and SmartEdu.
