Towards more sustainable agriculture with wearable technology

The project “Wearable Technology in Supporting Sustainable Food System and Farming (EXO AGRI)” launched at Häme University of Applied Sciences focuses on assisting agricultural and horticultural entrepreneurs through wearable technology, aiming to reduce workload and increase productivity.

Improving productivity is a key national economic goal, and the sustainability of the food system is a challenge both nationally and internationally. While robotics and automation can enhance efficiency in the food industry, wearable robots, such as exoskeletons that assist workers, could be the breakthrough technology for improving productivity in agriculture and horticulture.

The goal of EXO AGRI is to reduce physical workload, improve work efficiency, provide entrepreneurs with new skills in utilizing exoskeletons, develop new working methods, create a model for assessing technology needs, and provide guidelines for the adoption of exoskeletons.

The project specifically targets farmers, horticulturists, and greenhouses entrepreneurs in the regions of Kanta-Häme, Southwest Finland, Päijät-Häme, and Kymenlaakso. Small-scale food processors are also included in the target group, as they can benefit from wearable technology in areas like warehouse logistics and production.

Perhaps in the near future, farmers, horticulturists, as well as green and greenhouse entrepreneurs will have access to wearable smart devices specifically designed to meet their needs and tasks.

The project consists of five work packages, which include mapping farmers’ work processes, introducing and testing exoskeletons, assessing entrepreneurs’ technology skills, and preparing orientation and implementation materials for the use of exoskeletons.

EXO AGRI brings new opportunities to improve productivity in the agricultural and horticultural sectors and to develop a sustainable food system.

Try out exoskeletons at public events this September!

We will be showcasing exoskeletons at two events in September. Come by to explore and experience firsthand how exoskeletons feel and how they can lighten the workload.

Technology Day on September 17th at the Hämeenlinna University Centre.

At Häme University of Applied Sciences’ Technology Day, you’ll have the opportunity to try out various technologies, such as exoskeletons and XR, AR, and VR solutions, which integrate virtual learning environments into education. Additionally, you can explore smart glasses and robotics, which are revolutionizing learning and onboarding processes. The event is open to everyone.
