FISAP project educates building control authorities, rescue authorities and building designers in Finland by raising awareness and understanding of fire safety regulations and standards for sandwich panel products.
The use of sandwich panels in Finland has been increasing due to their energy efficiency and faster installation time. Sandwich panel products also have the potential for excellent fire safety. In order to be used on the Finnish market, sandwich panels must meet fire safety requirements and their essential fire safety properties must be declared in accordance with the product standard EN 14509 in order to obtain CE marking. However, due to the complexity of the relevant fire regulations and standards, the level of knowledge of them among authorities and building designers is variable, which may lead to risks in the fire-safe use of sandwich panel products in construction. It is therefore important to provide further training and thereby seek to update the knowledge of the relevant content of the standards among professionals.
The project aims to educate building control authorities, rescue authorities and building designers in Finland by increasing awareness and understanding of fire safety regulations and standards for sandwich panel products. During the project, training materials will be prepared and published, and local training sessions will be organised nationwide for municipal authorities and building designers in different regions. The training materials to be published will include lecture presentations and a fire safety handbook in Finnish and English, as well as training videos in English. The training courses and the publication of the training materials will increase the expertise of authorities and designers, thus minimising the risk of using sandwich panel products in construction projects that do not comply with EU and national regulations. This will improve fire safety in Finnish buildings.
The project is funded by Palosuojelurahasto (PSR) and construction product companies in the sector. Project partners are Teräsrakenneyhdistys (TRY) and construction product companies in the sector.
