Finland’s pursuit of carbon neutrality relies significantly on carbon sinks in the land use sector. The Digital Urban Carbon 2.0 dual project investigates what new and supplementary data and methodological recommendations can be produced to support cities’ low-carbon efforts, focusing on carbon sinks in built natural environments.
The core of the project involves processing laser scanning data, interpreting satellite data, and utilizing process-based models that describe carbon sequestration. From these data sources, the project will generate pilot geospatial information, the usability and significance of which will be assessed in urban organizations on a practical level.
The result of the projects will be a joint publication on methods to promote low-carbon efforts related to urban natural environments. Another outcome is a virtual urban environment model, as well as directly usable data resources. The first partial outputs will be shared in 2024 through the project’s communication channels.
