The Biochar Africa project aims to identify potential biochar markets in Southern and Eastern Africa, build innovation ecosystems at pilot sites, and develop competitive products and services for selected markets in Africa.
During the preparation phase between October 2020 and March 2021, local biochar business value chains in Kenya, Namibia and Zambia are identified, potential customers and partners are mapped and functional business models are considered together with Finnish companies.
The project is funded by the Business Finland and implemented by the Bio Research Unit of Häme University of Applied Sciences. We are looking for Finnish companies interested in collaboration for innovation and business development in Africa.

Biochar Africa will innovatively develop and combine biochar and biogas technologies to create a comprehensive system based on the principles of circular economy. Combining biochar and biogas processes expands biochar production opportunities; biochar production can be linked to, for example, agriculture, municipal waste management systems or food industry. Combining the processes will improve nutrient recycling possibilities and positively affect the usability of the end products. Testing and verifying the functionality of these processes for the development of technologically efficient and competitive solutions is an important part of the project.
During the preparation phase (Co-Creation phase), a detailed research plan for a joint Co-Innovation project is done together with Finnish companies and African partners.
