HAMK’s new sustainability principles have been defined

The sustainability principles guide all of HAMK’s activities from a sustainability perspective. The principles support HAMK’s strategy and frame the reporting on sustainability.

Our new sustainability principles are divided into four categories. The first one concerns our handprint, which means HAMK’s impact on society around us. The second category relates to environmental responsibility, the third one to social responsibility and the fourth to good administration, following the commonly used ESG classification (environmental, social and governance).

  1. Our impact is generated through education
    and research
  2. Our work is guided by environmental responsibility
  3. We are an inclusive place to both study and work in
  4. We are a responsible and developing organisation

“Our sustainability principles are essentially connected to the way we implement HAMK’s long-term strategy. They will guide us in making sustainable choices in our daily work,” says Mari Kamaja, Development Director.

Work on sustainability reporting continues

The principles are guidelines that can be applied to all strategic activities at HAMK. To translate the principles into more concrete terms, we will next start developing goals and indicators for them. In the future, we will report on their progress and implementation in our Annual Report.

“Sustainability reporting is undergoing a transformation, as the EU CSRD will guide companies and organisations to base their reporting on a specific framework and include it in their annual reports. While the directive does not oblige universities of applied sciences, we should follow suit. Both our financiers and partners increasingly expect this of us,” says Johanna Närhi, Director of Finance and Administration at HAMK.

“The Sustainable HAMK programme and GreenMetric ranking have up till now encouraged HAMK to operate more sustainably and measure the impacts of our activities. Underpinned by this work, we are now developing our activities further,” says Tuomas Salonen, Director of Real Estate Development.
