The development of secure AI utilization is underway in Häme

Adopting AI tools in environments that handle sensitive data, such as health information or trade secrets, requires specialized expertise. At HAMK, a solution is being developed for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Kanta-Häme region to enable the secure use of artificial intelligence.

The development of artificial intelligence technology has opened new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, but it has also raised questions about security and privacy. The project “Artificial Intelligence Research, Development, and Innovation Environment and Supporting SMEs`AI Expertise in Kanta-Häme (RDI-Intelligence)” aims to strengthen AI expertise and develop a virtual AI laboratory, where open-source AI tools facilitate the secure use of artificial intelligence. The AI laboratory is a development environment specifically designed for companies and organizations that prefer not to use commercial AI services due to concerns about data protection and security.

“It is estimated that artificial intelligence could increase efficiency and productivity in small and medium-sized enterprises by up to 30 percent. While there is a lot of discussion about the benefits of AI, there is less focus on data protection issues. This project aims to responsibly and securely enhance the region’s AI capital. To our knowledge, the planned secure development environment is unique and offers stakeholders the opportunity to conduct genuinely new experiments using artificial intelligence.” says Principal Research Scientist Timo Hynninen from HAMK.

While there is much discussion about the benefits of artificial intelligence, data protection issues often receive less attention.

In addition to developing the virtual AI laboratory, practical experiments will be organized for companies to tackle challenges related to artificial intelligence. These experiments will promote the use of AI in business, build AI expertise, and ensure that the necessary capabilities to use AI effectively are available in the future. The project also aims to foster the creation of a regional collaboration and innovation network focused on artificial intelligence.
