From Finland to Germany: Darja’s Double Degree Adventure
Meet Darja Pitšugina, a dynamic and adventurous International Business student who has taken every opportunity to broaden her horizons and push her limits. Darja’s educational journey has been nothing short of inspiring, from her studies at HAMK – Häme University of Applied Sciences to pursuing a Double Degree program in Deggendorf Institute of Technology, Germany. Most recently, she completed an internship in Barcelona, adding yet another chapter to her story.
“I believe youth is the perfect time to test your limits, challenge yourself, and widen your worldview,” Darja said. This belief has driven her to embrace new experiences, from excelling in sports like athletics and volleyball to immersing herself in different cultures and environments.
Stepping Beyond Comfort Zones: Why Choose a Double Degree?
A Double Degree is a special program where students complete a portion of their studies at their home university and another at a partner university abroad. By the end of the program, students earn two degree certificates – one from each institution. Unlike a typical exchange, the courses for a Double Degree are specifically tailored, and the study period abroad lasts at least one year, equivalent to 60 credits. This program provides a unique opportunity to deepen expertise in your field while gaining valuable international experience.
For Darja, going on exchange and pursuing a Double Degree was a natural decision. She wanted to make the most of her time as a student and saw these opportunities as a way to grow both personally and professionally.
“I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and test my skills in different environments,” she explained. The chance to study abroad not only aligned with her adventurous spirit but also offered invaluable life lessons and academic experiences that shaped her into the person she is today.
Germany Calling: Why Deggendorf Stood Out
When it came to choosing a location for her Double Degree program, Darja had a choice between Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. The vibrant culture of Germany, complete with iconic events like Oktoberfest and lively student parties, immediately caught her attention.
“Deggendorf just felt right. I couldn’t resist the culture and the fun atmosphere.” – Darja Pitšugina
Deggendorf, known as the “Gateway to the Bavarian Forest,” is a charming town in southeastern Germany along the Danube River. With its colorful old town, cozy cafes, and lively beer gardens, it offers a welcoming mix of tradition and modernity. Surrounded by stunning nature, it’s a hub for outdoor adventures and a vibrant university community.
Academics in Deggendorf
The academic environment in Deggendorf offered Darja a fresh and more structured approach to learning. Compared to the creative and flexible style of HAMK, her studies in Germany were more demanding and focused heavily on theoretical knowledge.
“It was quite different from what I was used to at HAMK. In Germany, there was a stricter academic environment that pushed us to build a solid theoretical foundation, whereas HAMK allowed us to express more creativity in our work.” – Darja Pitšugina
Despite the challenges, Darja appreciated the opportunity to experience contrasting educational methods, which enriched her overall academic journey.
A Day in Darja’s Shoes: Life as an Exchange Student
Darja’s days in Deggendorf were a perfect blend of academics, sports, and social activities. She had about four hours of lectures each day, leaving ample time for team projects, assignments, and personal interests.
Her afternoons were often spent learning German and practicing volleyball, including beach volleyball. “There were always ice cream breaks and dormitory gatherings with friends,” she said with a smile.
Embracing Life Outside the Classroom
When Darja wasn’t studying, she was fully immersed in the vibrant student life in Deggendorf. From training for volleyball competitions to participating in student events and pre-drink gatherings, she formed deep connections with peers from around the world.
“The social scene was amazing. It was all about bonding with friends and creating unforgettable memories”, she said.
Advice for Future Exchange and Double Degree Students
To anyone considering an exchange or Double Degree program, Darja’s message is clear: “Go for it!”
“It might feel overwhelming at first, but it’s absolutely worth it. These experiences are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow, challenge yourself, and build incredible memories.” – Darja Pitšugina
Darja’s journey from Finland to Germany, and eventually to Barcelona, is a testament to the transformative power of exchange programs. Through her courage and determination, she has not only excelled academically but also discovered new passions and perspectives. As Darja’s story shows, the world is full of opportunities waiting to be explored.’
