Graduating Soon: Is Helsinki My Next Stop?
Hi Students, are you graduating soon? Are you wondering where to go after graduation? Are you thinking that Helsinki is your only option? I am Vignesh Kandi, Computer Applications student from HAMK. I would like to share with you some pros and cons of choosing Helsinki for settlement after graduation.
Considering a Move to Helsinki? Read This First!
If your studies are coming to an end or you are already on the hunt for a job in Finland, you might
be weighing the pros and cons of moving to Helsinki. While it’s true that Helsinki boasts more job
opportunities compared to smaller cities like Hämeenlinna/Valkeakoski/Riihimäki, the decision to move isn’t straightforward.
Job Market Reality in Helsinki
Helsinki indeed offers a wider range of job opportunities, especially in sectors like IT and
business. However, simply being in Helsinki doesn’t guarantee a job. The city has seen a
significant influx of job seekers, and not everyone finds employment quickly. Additionally, the cost
of living in Helsinki is considerably higher. For example, a standard studio apartment near public
transport can cost around €700 a month—a steep increase from what you might pay in
Hämeenlinna.
Financial Considerations
Before you pack your bags, consider the financial implications. If you’re strict about budgeting,
the higher living costs in Helsinki, Vantaa, or Espoo could strain your finances. Instead of
committing to a permanent move, why not try applying for jobs remotely or make regular visits to
Helsinki? A train ticket costs about €10, which is a more budget-friendly way to explore job
opportunities than committing to high monthly rents.
If you decide to move, consider sharing an apartment with your friend. This is not only a cost-effective option but also a great way to share
responsibilities. Keep in mind that while there are housing options available, the competition can
be high, and availability in good area is not guaranteed.
Building Connections
Many people miss out because they don’t maintain their professional networks, especially with
influential figures in big companies. Staying connected is key. To improve your job prospects, start
by networking through volunteer work or internships, especially in IT. In other industries, chatting
with recent graduates or seasoned professionals can provide valuable insights.
Final Thoughts
Moving to a new city is a big decision. Before making a leap, think it over carefully. Talk to peers
who have made similar moves and gather as much information as you can. And remember, if the
job search from afar isn’t successful, being there in person doesn’t necessarily change your
prospects.
Good luck, and remember that planning and patience are your best allies in this journey!
