Behind the Seams – Approaching manufacturing and learning processes
The autumn theme for the Smart and Sustainable Design students this year was “Layers’’. This versatile and thought provoking concept guided us while creating products for our first exhibition.
Each student took their own, very personal approach in the manufacturing process. Some chose to carefully analyse their inspiration first, others took careful steps to plan every technical detail. Some students started creating, relying on the product-to-be to lead their vision.
When asked to describe the process in three words, the students responded with “Learn from mistake’’, “Preparation, Collaboration, Patience’’ and “Layers, inspiration, creativity’’, proving how unique the experiences were.
“I think it’s very exciting to be able to display fellow classmates’ works and to be able to share them with the community; i.e. other university students who aren’t part of the Design courses and the ones who are and have more experience.“
– Fellow student from the exhibition group
Whilst assembling the exhibition, students reflected on the positivity of collaboration. It felt rewarding to assemble the pieces together and in that way be able to showcase our work. The goal was not professional-looking products, but efficient learning experiences and personal growth as a designer. We hope you can get as much joy from our exhibition as we do.
