HAMK’s School of Professional Teacher Education most popular in Finland

The application period for professional teacher education programmes has ended. This year HAMK received a total of 1832 priority applications, which was the highest number of applicants of all five Finnish Schools of Professional Teacher Education.

For the fourth year in a row, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) has the highest number of applicants combined to all its teacher education programmes. Professional Teacher Education and Professional Guidance Counsellor Education, which are conducted in English, received a total of 336 applications. 238 of the applications were for the International Professional Teacher Education programme, and 98 for the new Professional Guidance Counsellor Education programme.

The number of applicants for professional guidance counsellor education was the highest in our history. Part of the popularity can be explained by our professional guidance counsellor education, which is offered for the first time also in English. The programme in English is intended to meet the increasing demand from the working life as there are more students who are not Finnish-speaking.

“We want to provide the skills to build expertise also in English so that language proficiency doesn’t prevent the guidance. Each field has, for example, professional vocabulary that requires mastering,” says Marianne Kukko, the Dean of the School of Professional Teacher Education unit.

According to Kukko, HAMK’s first place for the fourth year in a row shows that long-term work has paid off, as all programmes have been constantly developed to meet the needs of the working life. In feedback surveys from graduates, the rating is 4.4 (on a scale of 1-5) and according to the responses, people apply to HAMK’s professional teacher education because of the suitable implementation methods and recommendations from others.

The admission results for professional guidance counsellor education will be published on March 19, 2025. The admissions for professional teacher education will be published on March 27, 2025. The next application period for professional teacher education programmes will be in January 2026.

In addition to HAMK, the application process for professinoal teacher education programmes has included Haaga-Helia, Jyväskylä, Oulu, and Tampere Universities of Applied Sciences.
