Increased vitality and overall sustainability to Uusimaa region

Crossing planetary boundaries causes changes and risks in our operating environment, as a result of which we must modify our ways of operating and develop food production methods. Changes in the operating environment have highlighted the increasing importance of self-sufficiency and food security in food production. Safe, sustainably produced food is key to both human well-being and the functioning of society. In a new information dissemination project, we aim to increase awareness among all actors in the food chain of the opportunities brought by sustainable food production and new innovations in Uusimaa, based on the latest research data.

There is still untapped potential in the land use sector for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially in carbon sequestration in fields. At the same time, challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic and the current geopolitical situation have highlighted the importance of food self-sufficiency and security of supply. The significance of these themes will only increase in the future, as the effects of climate change may cause new, unexpected disruptions in the market. By reducing dependencies on external resources and utilizing the principles of circular economy, we can strengthen both the sustainability of food production and its ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions.

Information and cooperation for a more sustainable future

The project aims to promote the economic viability, environmental friendliness, and resilience of food production in the Uusimaa region. In this joint project between Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Häme University of Applied Sciences, the latest information on sustainable agriculture, innovative food production, and circular economy opportunities will be shared to support the vitality of rural areas. Laurea acts as the main coordinator of the project, while HAMK brings strong expertise in agriculture and practical knowledge in developing sustainable solutions. Lecturers from HAMK’s Climate Smart Agriculture degree program will contribute their expertise to the project, and research and development work from HAMK Bio research unit will be utilized in the project.

The project connects industry players and collaborates with other projects, such as the “Climate Expert – Research information and good practices for consumers and rural entrepreneurs” project, as well as the Sustainable and Responsible Farm (MaKe) project. The project organizes various events for both a wide audience and smaller target groups, focusing on different themes and regional needs in Western, Central, and Eastern Uusimaa. The aim of the events and meetings is to disseminate the latest information in the field, strengthen the networks of industry players in the region, and identify and evaluate various development measures.

The project aims to promote the introduction of new solutions through diverse collaboration and active knowledge sharing. At the same time, it sheds light on funding opportunities for research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities, which can be continued even after the project period. The project provides tools for renewal and utilization of innovations for rural actors in Uusimaa. The project period is from 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2026, and the funding for the project has been granted by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development for the years 2023-2027.
