Exploring the World: Martyna Słodyczka’s Exchange Journey to the Netherlands
Meet Martyna Słodyczka, a 24-year-old student from Poland who is currently studying abroad in the Netherlands. Her journey has been one of bold decisions and personal growth, as she traded in a promising career as a paramedic for a new adventure in Finland, and now continues her studies in the Netherlands. Here, she shares her experiences of studying abroad, the exchange program, and how it has shaped her both personally and professionally.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Martyna’s story begins in Poland, where she was born and raised. With a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Care, she had already secured a career as a paramedic. But Martyna knew she was meant for something different. “I always felt like Poland is not a place for me. Since a young age, I knew I wanted to live abroad,” she said. “So when I decided to move to Finland to study International Business at HAMK University, it didn’t surprise anyone.”
After more than two years of living in Finland, Martyna reflects on her choice: “It was the best decision I ever made.” Her passion for adventure and travel is evident, as she dreams of exploring the world and working in an international environment.
Why an Exchange Program?
Martyna’s decision to embark on an exchange program was motivated by her desire to continue pursuing her dreams of traveling while gaining valuable international experience. “Going on exchange allows me to visit another country and slowly make my dreams about traveling come true,” she said. “The lesson I took from moving abroad is that it’s always great to get a new perspective. If I hadn’t come to Finland, I wouldn’t be the person I am right now.”
When the opportunity to go on exchange presented itself, Martyna knew she had to take it. The exchange was not just about exploring a new place, but about furthering her personal and academic growth. “When I saw the chance, I knew it was something I wanted to do.”
Choosing NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden
Martyna’s choice of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden was influenced by her positive experience with the university during her studies at HAMK. “NHL Stenden was introduced to us in our first year, and I kept hearing teachers and friends talk highly about it,” she explained. After participating in the RUN-EU project organized by the university, Martyna visited the campus and knew immediately that it was the right fit. “When I saw the university for myself, I knew this is where I wanted to spend my exchange.”
The Academic Experience: A New Approach to Learning
Martyna has enjoyed her studies at NHL Stenden, especially because the university uses a similar educational approach to HAMK. “The system here is quite similar, as we also use Design-Based Education. We learn through real-life cases for real companies,” she said. However, she also appreciates the differences in teaching methods, which she finds refreshing. “There is more freedom and flexibility in the work we do here. It’s up to us how we want our reports and presentations to look, as long as they contain the solution for the case. This gives us more opportunities to showcase our creativity and strengths.”
Her current minor, “Intercultural and International Communication,” is a perfect fit for her interests. “This minor connects all of my interests, especially intercultural management, which I’m really passionate about,” she said.
Life in Leeuwarden: A Small City with Big Opportunities
Life outside of classes has also been a highlight of Martyna’s exchange experience. Leeuwarden, a charming city in the north of the Netherlands, offers a mix of history, culture, and plenty of activities for students. “During my free time, I love walking around the city center, which is full of cafes and restaurants with beautiful views,” she shared.
The university’s Exchange Student Union organizes a variety of events such as painting sessions, trivia nights, and even student parties. “There are also parties organized in the basement of Student Stay, which is a complex of student apartments,” she added. For those who enjoy a movie night, Leeuwarden also has a cinema that shows films in English, a perfect way to relax with friends.
With the Netherlands being a small country, weekends offer the chance to explore other cities. “You can visit many cities around the Netherlands, as it’s quite small, and you can reach anywhere in 3-4 hours,” Martyna said.
Advice for Future Exchange Students
For anyone considering an exchange or double degree program, Martyna has some valuable advice: “Don’t be afraid. It can be challenging in some ways – you’ll be leaving your friends and everything you know – but there is so much more waiting for you out there. You’ll meet new people, have new experiences, and become a better version of yourself.”
Her exchange experience has not only opened doors to personal growth and international perspectives but has also deepened her passion for working in a global setting. “It’s all about the experiences you gain along the way and the people you meet,” she said. As Martyna continues her studies at NHL Stenden, one thing is certain: her journey is far from over, and the world is waiting for her to explore it further.
