Jeppe Raitio chosen as Forestry Teacher of the Year 2024
Jeppe Raitio, who teaches forestry at Evo campus, has been selected as Forest Teacher of the Year by the Forestry Students’ Association (MEOL). MEOL organises an annual nationwide survey for forestry students to assess the quality of teaching at universities of applied sciences and to find the best forestry teacher.
The students have justified Raitio’s selection as the Forest Teacher of the Year by, among others, the following reasons:
“It’s nice and safe to be in his classes, because he maintains the atmosphere with his forestry humour and calm demeanour. His strong attitude, together with his experience in the world of work, ensures that students receive high-quality, work-oriented teaching.”
Forestry students announced the Forestry Teacher of the Year 2024 at an event organised by METO – Forestry Experts Association in Vantaa on 24 October 2024.
Jeppe was very surprised to receive the honour, but overall he felt grateful. “What’s particularly warming about the recognition is that this is a student’s choice. It’s a big deal for me personally. A big thank you also goes to the Evo community, because no one does this work alone. The degree programme supports teachers, and you can always ask your expert colleagues for advice, guidance and direction. Without this support and staff, it doesn’t work, and all of these contribute to the overall teaching and student experience.”
His lessons are comfortable and safe, as he maintains the atmosphere with his forestry humour and calm demeanour.
Student feedback
“Jeppe really deserves this recognition. I have had the pleasure of teaching with Jeppe in the same modules and I have always admired the way he treats his students. He genuinely cares about his students and helps them move forward. He draws on his vast experience in the forestry sector and is yet very familiar with the fields progress and up to date practicalities” says Elise Stenroos, Head of Degree Programme in Forestry Education at HAMK.
In addition to HAMK, forestry engineer degrees can be obtained in Finland at the universities of applied sciences of Sout-Eastern Finland, Karelia, Tampere, Lapland and Novia. HAMK currently has around 350 forestry students studying both in Finnish and in the international Sustainable Forest Management degree programme. The number of new students entering the forestry sector each year is around 400 for all the universities of applied sciences combined. (Source: Vipunen)
