We promote smart and sustainable farming practices and the use of digital tools on both crop and animal husbandry farms.
Mitigation and adaptiveness to the climate change as well as stopping the decline of biodiversity are inevitably and urgently topical issues. Even though, climate change might enhance the agricultural profitability and yielding in Finland, due to the extended growth period and heat summation, the unexpected changes in weather and climatic extreme event might cause unforeseeable damage to agriculture.
Farmers can best benefit from positive changes and minimise disadvantages by preparing for changes proactively, through information gathering and training. Kestävästi ja vastuullisesti toimiva maatila -projects provide information and training for farmers in preparing for the environmental changes and building resilience for the future oriented production. Communication and training are offered in small groups, webinars, field events, seminars and trips in Finland and abroad. The project is implemented by ProAgria Southern Finland and Häme University of Applied Sciences. ProAgria Southern Finland is the project coordinator.
Target group
The primary target group of the project is farmers in Häme and Southeast Finland. All actors in the agricultural sector can participate in webinars, workshops and observation days. The events are free of charge, with the exception of the study trip.
Operating area
MaKe in Häme, Kanta and Päijät-Häme and MaKe in Southeast Finland, Kymenlaakso and South Karelia.
Implementation
The implementation is divided into four parts.
1. Small group activities
2. Training programmes
3. Short-term events and study trips
4. Smart agriculture – farming with knowledge (HAMK is responsible for implementing)
This part presents the latest technology and innovative experiments in regenerative farming. Project will increase the attractiveness of regenerative farming and improve farmers’ competence in regenerative farming practices. In connection with food production, regenerative farming aims to improve soil fertility, water protection and the agroecosystems. The technology used on farms will be investigated, field robotics will be familiarised, and data produced by satellite and crop maps and sensors installed in the field will be utilised. Project plan includes webinars, brainstorming sessions, workshops and observation days as well as a training sessions.
The uptake of regenerative farming methods provides farmers with tools to improve crop security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase carbon storage and biodiversity on the farms. The possibilities of utilizing robotics, data management will be increased during the project by highlighting the best practices in the use of digital technology and automation. Eventually bringing concrete benefits to farmers, experts in the field, teaching staff and students.
