Background

The GO STRONG! project’s main aim was to increase the possibilities of the international students of HAMK Valkeakoski campus to get employed in Finland. We worked towards this by offering students help with job search, organizing workshops to help students with e.g. CV writing and creating opportunities for students to network with the businesses of the region.

Find Work in Finland job hunting guide

Read through the Find Work in Finland job hunting guide that was created during the project. There you’ll find versatile information about different topics from CV writing to taxation in Finland.

Quick tips for job search in Finland

  1. Create a personal CV that stands out and looks like YOU.
  2. Create a good LinkedIn profile. It works as your online resume.
  3. Check the online job sites frequently, for example:
  4. Search for work in social media.
  5. Contact employers directly.
    • It could very well pay off to ask around in local companies for job openings. It also shows initiative! (Check Victoria’s story in the videos below, where she tells how she basically created a job for herself in a local company!)
  6. Follow the “Työpaikat ja projektit / liiketalous (FI/EN)” and “IB WorkPlacement” groups for International Business students and “Työpaikat ja projektit / tekniikka (FI/EN)” for Electrical and Automation Engineering students in HAMK Yammer. There you can find job and internship advertisements.
  7. Keep an open mind.
    • It’s very unlikely to get the top position right away in the beginning. All work experience is valuable, and will help you on your career path!
  8. Learn some Finnish!
    • Almost all Finns speak rather good English, but it will help you a lot in job search if you can speak Finnish. And when you are asked if you speak Finnish, don’t answer “Not really.” or “Not that much.” Rather answer “I do, and I’m learning more!”
  9. Consider entrepreneurship
    • How about starting your own business? Finland provides good opportunities for entrepreneurship. There are many ways you can get help in the first steps of starting a business, for example from Ensimetri. You can read more about starting a business in Finland here.
