The UVIDI project aims to promote regenerative farming in two main areas: skills development and the advancement of digitalization.
The environmental objectives of the food industry create a need for farms to enhance their skills and capabilities. One of the key areas of development relates to promoting low-carbon practices in primary production. In this context, carbon sequestration in agriculture is a crucial factor that can be advanced through regenerative farming practices. As agricultural production chains digitize, various digital tools are rapidly being adopted in farm operations, impacting individual farmers. Digitalization is widely utilized not only in verifying and monitoring carbon farming but also in various cultivation-related tasks.
The skills development component seeks to enhance awareness and expertise in regenerative farming practices on farms in Häme through training and participatory group work. This is implemented through collaboration between Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) and the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG), managing the Carbon Action network.
Regarding the promotion of digitalization, the project engages in the development of digital solutions for regenerative farming in a participatory process with farmers. Pilot farms implementing regenerative farming practices are selected within the project’s operational area, and collaborative efforts are made to pilot measurements and digital solutions supporting regenerative farming. Digitalization pilots, tailored to farmers’ needs, are conducted in collaboration with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and BSAG, linking to BSAG’s field observatory service.
Within the project, farmers have the opportunity to engage in interaction, communication, and networking facilitated by Carbon Action. They also participate in information sharing and training conducted as part of the project. The outcome includes a guided online training product for farmers, accessible even after the project concludes.
Implementation
The project promotes regenerative farming practices and digitalization on farms in Häme. The implementation of the project is divided into four work packages (WP).
WP1: Promoting regenerative farming practices in accordance with the Carbon Action network’s methods: Farmers are engaged in Carbon Action network activities, information sharing, and interaction. Additionally, selected pilot farms are integrated into the measurement system maintained by Carbon Action (Field Observatory).
WP2: Dissemination of information and expertise related to regenerative farming: Farmers interested in regenerative farming are trained using a training package created in the project. The training package is intended to be offered by HAMK to farmers and other actors in the food chain interested in carbon farming, even after the conclusion of the project.
WP3: Advancing Digitalization in Regenerative Farming: The project applies online measurements and methods based on continuous data collection to monitor the effects of regenerative farming. Measurement pilots are established in the project for selected farms implementing regenerative farming, specifically for the digitalization pilots in regenerative farming.
WP4: Communication: Activities, events, training, and other collaborations within the project are actively communicated to the project’s target groups.
