The first joint application process of the year has ended – the number of applicants to HAMK has more than doubled
The first round of the spring joint application process ended on 19 January. 2,623 applicants from all over the world applied for degree programmes delivered in English at Häme University of Applied Sciences. Last year, the number of applicants was 1,150, which means that the number of applicants increased by almost 130 per cent.
The first joint application process for the spring included HAMK’s degree programmes in English: eight Bachelor’s degree programmes and two Master’s degree programmes. The applicants came from all around the world, including India, China, Kenya, Nepal, Russia and Estonia.
Each HAMK’s degree programme included in the application process received a record number of applications. The most popular degree programme among the applicants was Computer Applications at Hämeenlinna University Centre, which received a total of 717 applications. The second and third most popular degree programmes were International Business (Valkeakoski and online studies) and Information and Communication Technologies, Bioeconomy at the Forssa campus.
“The record results of the joint application process show that Finland appears to be an attractive country for high-quality higher education to foreign applicants. As regards HAMK, such a significant increase in the number of applicants indicates the attractiveness of HAMK’s versatile degree programmes and the effectiveness of our international marketing activities,” summarises Kati Heikkinen, Head of International Affairs at HAMK.
Progression of the selection process
The selection methods for HAMK’s degree programmes in English are the national International UAS Exam online entrance examination, matriculation examination selection and SAT test results measuring different abilities. HAMK’s own online entrance examination is used in the Smart and Sustainable Design degree programme.
International UAS Exam consists of two stages that are organised entirely online. The written test for the first stage will be carried out on Wed 9 February 2022 at noon. All eligible applicants that pass the written test will be invited to the second stage. The group interviews for the second stage will be organised at HAMK between 7 and 15 March 2022.
HAMK’s own entrance examination for Smart and Sustainable Design will be organised online from 28 to 30 March 2022. The entrance examination consists of two parts: those who successfully complete the motivation letter and design tasks will be invited to an online English language test.
The selection method for Master’s degree programmes in English also consists of two stages: a preliminary assignment and an interview. For the Management in Sustainable Business degree programme, the applicants will draw up a research plan and participate in a group interview online. In addition to a research plan, the applicants will prepare a motivation letter in the Sustainable Technologies degree programme, and they will be interviewed individually online.
The results of the selections will be communicated to the applicants no later than 3 June 2022.
Applying for degree programmes delivered in English will continue in the spring
Applicants living abroad can still apply for HAMK’s degree programmes delivered in English in HAMK’s own extended separate application process, which will be active between 1 February and 10 May 2022. Through the separate application process launched in autumn 2021, almost 300 applicants from all over the world have already applied for HAMK’s degree programmes delivered in English. The majority of applicants in the separate application process come from outside Europe, from more than 50 different nations. So far, the largest number of applications have come from Iran, Morocco and India.
In total, almost 3,000 applicants have applied for degree programmes delivered in English that start next autumn, through both the joint application process and the separate application process. The application process will continue until May, so the final number of applicants could be significantly higher at the end of the application process.
The number of applicants for HAMK’s degree programmes delivered in English has increased steadily over the past few years.
HAMK has been determined to increase the offering of degree programmes in English in recent years. In line with its strategy, HAMK is building a strong international higher education community and striving for a significant increase in the number of students by 2030.
